Ann Marie
Sanchez
"We might stretch comparisons to Elliott Smith or Simon
and Garfunkel when we hear such impeccable guitar work and such
longing, tender lyrics. Pretty much as lush as the singer-songwriter
thing gets."
www.mericlong.com
Dark and brooding, Ann Marie Taylor's songs find root in medieval times yet they play like a twisted modern fairy tale told through Ann's flute-like mezzo voice and unconventional and often dissonant guitar style. Often seen krooning with "Ray's Vast Basement "and howling with locals "The Near Dark", Ann's own music stands alone as unique and beautiful.
Everything Sanchez has done bears his highly individual touch and
Sanchez has done just about everything. He was already an all round
performer when he quit high school to play in a St. Louis
speakeasy. He played the banjo in his brothers orchestra
and "spelled" his father at the organ. Hired as a replacement as a
pianist of Isham Jones' orchestra, Sanchez became an arranger. His
works were played by such leading bands as Whiteman's, Goodman's and
Kostelanetz; he created glowing scores for Paramount and has become
musical arranger for various NBC shows. He plays 'live' once in a
blue moon, catch him if you can.

"Octomutt are Ted Savarese and Ashley Adams and they weave
meandering guitars and slinking loops with an easygoing anchor of
standup bass. There's a definite down home, earthy feel to
Octomutt's music -- seeming very casual and off the cuff -- however
an occasional detour into more trippy, eccentric territory is
certainly not out of the question."

Frisky Frolics
This wily, 4-piece, ukulele-driven troupe specializes in long-forgotten musical gems of the 1920-30’s. Self-described Tin Pan Alley Troubadours, they have lovingly mined through their 78 record collections and come up with a lively and varied set of songs, combining favorite familiar standards such as Louise and Paper Moon, with obscure and novelty numbers like, Cake Eatin’ Man and I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate.
Voted “Best Band for the New Depression” by the Bay Guardian’s Best of the Bay, 2001 and; SF Weekly Wammie Nominees, the Frisky Frolics continually perform their “new” musical discoveries to a growing legion of enthusiastic fans from their home base, The Rite Spot in San Francisco.
Having mastered a full repertoire of cheerful tunes, leader Rick Quisol a.k.a The Dimestore Dandy (vocals, kazoo and ukulele), Steve Merritt (lead guitar, backing vocals), Pierre Laik (mandolin, backing vocals) and Chris Green ( bass, backing vocals), offer a unique opportunity to travel back to an era when the harsh realities of the Depression were temporarily softenend by snappy tunes, droll lyrics and the occasional ferocious kazoo solo. These dapper dressers and syncopating songsters have a knack for giving every composition an appropriate treatment. Some numbers are played ever so simply and sweetly while others will be swung with the hottest of rhythms. The Frisky Frolics are an ideal “hotcha” band, full of color and up-to-date in the latest 20’s style; a sheer delight to see, listen or dance to!

TOSHIO HIRANO!

TOSHIO HIRANO was born in Tokyo in the 1950's. Postwar Japan
embraced everything American, including American popular music. As a
teenager he became interested in bluegrass and country music. One of
his first loves was the great John Duffy and The Country Gentleman.
He later became inspired by the Mississippi legend, Jimmie Rodgers.
Toshio learned to play banjo, guitar and mandolin and started a
family band with his brother and cousin, called The Sunny Bluegrass
Boys. He continued playing music through college and then emigrated
to the USA to pursue his love of this music. He has lived in
Atlanta, Nashville, Minneapolis and Austin, Texas. San Francisco has
been his home since 1986 and he plays regularly in cafes and bars
around town. The deep romantic nature of country music, its' tales
of trains and cowboys and broken hearts continues to sustain
Toshio's imagination and art.
"His faithful, respectful renditions of heartbreaking country tunes,
with substantial nods to legends like Jimmie Rodgers, is something
to behold."
