Toshio Hirano
early shows on Mondays
8:00!
free

Toshio was born in Tokyo in the 1950's. Postwar Japan embraced
everything American, including American popular music. As a teenager
he became interested in bluegrass and country music. One of his
first loves was the great John Duffy and The Country Gentleman. He
later became inspired by the Mississippi legend, Jimmie Rodgers.
Toshio learned to play banjo, guitar and mandolin and started a
family band with his brother and cousin, called The Sunny Bluegrass
Boys. He continued playing music through college and then emigrated
to the USA to pursue his love of this music. He has lived in
Atlanta, Nashville, Minneapolis and Austin, Texas. San Francisco has
been his home since 1986 and he plays regularly in cafes and bars
around town. The deep romantic nature of country music, its' tales
of trains and cowboys and broken hearts continues to sustain
Toshio's imagination and art.

Frisky Frolics

From the Panic of 1907 to the Great Depression, an economically
shattered populace found comfort in the light, cheerful tunes of Tin
Pan Alley. The jury's still out on the current economy, but there's
no doubt that THE FRISKY FROLICS have mastered a full repertoire of
those cheerful tunes – just in case. (from the 2002 Best of the Bay,
Guardian award "Best Music for the New Depression")

Mix Tape
Dena Connelly
early show
8:00!
free

Karina Denike, Brigid Dawson and Meric Long ( a.k.a. Mix Tape) , are
three local singer-songwriters who collaborate for fun, inspiration
and the excuse to drink cheap wine. Their sound is a compilation of
originals and covers, ranging from torch songs to movie soundtracks.
Two voices and a guitar...sex on toast.

Dena Connolly: As front lady of local indie pop trio Giant Value,
Dena stands on her toes, and plays with moxie. Solo, aka "Lesser
Value," Dena plays guitar, piano and some ukulele; the songs are
still tightly wound and full of hooks. Listen to this to be
reminded that everything is eternally beautiful and all right.

Dame Satan: "Ghostly ballads and sweet, soaring harmonies from Mission District Americana outfit."

"Dave Gleason's Wasted Days encompasses the grittier end of the roots
music landscape, sculpting rough-hewn moments of grace alongside good-time jamming -- the perfect counterpoint to the slick countrypolitan and sloppy twangcore that dominate hick music today. - www.dave-gleason.com"

"Afternoon driving music for folks who like a little country in their pop (er.. or is that a little pop in their folk... maybe a little pop-folk in their country. Listen to them and then do the math). www.maderaroad.com"

Spooky folk by a man and his guitar.
