J Thackray's Songwriter Showcase
8:00 pm

featuring:

Lindsay Garfield (One Horse Power)
Matthew Herz
Ted Nunes
Aaron Gomes (Vernal Falls)
Liam Carey (Mandrake)

Lindsay Garfield
Lindsay Garfield and Charlie Brown are two thirds of
the San Francisco-based ensemble one horse power.
Influence for Lindsay's melodies range from cabaret
and jazz to country and old Jewish folk songs, and her
lyrical material comes from stories she finds in
books, film, and in her dreams. Charlie Brown
breathes life into Lindsay's song skeletons with rich,
moody, and jazz-infused piano-speak, while maintaining
the purity and color found in these long lost tales.

Matthew Herz
www.e14records.com
Matthew Herz has taken his study of classical guitar and turned it
into an entirely new kind of music. Bending classical and folk/rock
genres into rhythmic and melodic pieces, Mr. Herz has been compared
to a classical John Fahey.

Aaron Gomes
Vernal Falls www.vernalfalls.com utilizes homeade alternate guitar
tunings, finger picks, slides, & harmonicas, while singing rich-
textured and timeless music often compared to John Fahey, M. Ward,
Nick Drake, and Sam Beam. These days Vernal Falls is putting the
finishing touches on his new record titled The High Ground , as well
as lining up killer shows for everyone at home in Visalia CA. at his
booming venue Howie and Son's Pizza www.howieandsonspizza.com

Ted Nunes
Singer/songwriter Ted Nunes fronts the central valley (CA) neo/folk
roots rock band Richfield. With his feet planted firmly in
traditional songwriting, Ted Nunes isn't just trying to repeat the
footsteps of his influences, but taking what he has learned and
passing it on to new listeners. Too many influences to name but
here are a few......Dylan, Johnny Cash, The Band, David Bowie....and
so on.

Liam Carey
www.liamcarey.net
Playing banjo and toy slide guitars, Liam Carey brings a raw quality
to his americana-influenced folk. Mr. Carey cites as influences
such modern folk stars as Sam Beam as well as old-time folk heroes
like Blind Willie Johnson.

Anton Barbeau
Stephen Smith

"Anton Barbeau crafts one hell of a pop song. Be it an assignment
for a songwriting class ("Dig My Pig") or a retelling of Roman
Polaksni's Repulsion ("Jane too Soon"), Barbeau can go-go-go. The
ditties are slight, some little more than two chords bouncing back
and forth. The lyrics, too, are sweet and odd and tasty -- just the
right mix to leave you singing along after only a listen or two. By
no means do I intend to cast aspersions on simplicity. I love
simplicity. Some of my best friends are simple. And Barbeau knows
that simple and pop are a potent mix. Barbeau's taking it back,
doing it old-school. These are '60s style bubble gum pop songs like
1910 Fruitgum Company used to do."

STEPHEN SMITH'S music has been described by one glib commentator
as 'the little black dress of rock: comfortable and stylish in all
situations.' He is a veteran of Paisley Underground faves Salem 66
and post-grunge Sub Pop act Green Magnet School. He also enjoys the
distinction of having been the very first act signed to England's
Domino Records. As a solo performer, he's a little bit country and
a little bit rock and roll, but more like Elliott Smith than Elvis.
Expect songs about girls, sung in past and present tenses, and
standard chord progressions mixed with some occasional dissonance.
The singing's a little gruff but not gravelly, occasionally bell-
like, and always twang-free. Stephen's current band 'The Morning
Line' has a website and you can check it out at
